COUNCIL APPROVES SALE OF LAND FOR RETIREMENT VILLAGE

The Town Council of Mossel Bay at its monthly meeting on 24 February 2011 approved the sale of Erf 11567 in Heiderand to the Rotary Club of Mossel Bay for the establishment of a 230-unit retirement village over a period of five years.

The property of 9 ha in extent will be sold to the Rotary Club at a cost of R7,3 million. The transaction is, however, subject to public participation processes as required by law.

The developer will be responsible for the transfer, rezoning and subdivision of the property. The cost for the construction of a portion of the access road (Apiesdoring Street) as well as link engineering services for water, electricity and sewerage will be dealt with in future capital budgets of the Municipality.

In motivating the proposal in Council, Alderman Emil Scheepers, Chairperson of Council’s Technical Committee, emphasised that the proposal was made in the context of Council’s strategic plan adopted in the course of last year. The need for retirement accommodation was identified in the Municipality’s strategic planning process.

He also said the project will generate much-needed work for professional and other relevant disciplines which had a difficult time in recent years because of the international economic meltdown.
